CARIBOU REEL. AKA - "Reel du Caribou (1)." Canadian, Reel. E Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Composed by Woodridge, Manitoba, Métis fiddler biography:Andy Dejarlis (1914-1975). The version in Songer's 1997 book, current among Portland, Oregon, contra dance musicians, is slightly distanced from the original (which appears in the Appendix). The tune was also recorded by Métis fiddler John Arcand.

"Caribou Reel" is so strikingly melodically, harmonically and structurally similar to the Irish reel "Pigeon on the Gate (1)" that it is hard to think DeJarlis was not at least highly influenced by it, yet there are enough differences to consider them separate and non-cognate tunes.
