The air appears under this title (also the first line of the song) as Air 24 in John Gay's Beggar's Opera of 1729, set to the tune of "When once I lay with another man's wife." It is also in John Playford's Musick's Handmaid of 1678. Lawyers apparently were held in similar esteem in Gay's time as now-days.
