The melody was first published in John Walsh's The Compleat Country Dancing-Master, Volume the Fourth (London, 1747, p. 10) as "Four Drunken Maids." It was included in the music manuscript collections of Northumbrian musician William Vickers [1] (1770), and London musician Thomas Hammersley (1790).
