CORNISH FLORAL DANCE. English (Cornwall), Country Dance (3/4 time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. The title may refer to the Helston Furry Day festivities, held at Helston, Cornwall, in May. According to Simpson & Roud (Oxford Dictionary of English Folklore, 2000), the word 'furry' is a dialect term related to 'fair', while the word 'flora' or 'floral' (used by both locals and visitors) "may have been introduced by early 'authorities' who liked to link our customs with Roman festivals, but the word so well sums up the spring greenery and flowers which decorate the town, and its inhabitants, that its aptness probably guarantees its continuance" (p. 173).
