''Source for notated version'': Willima Litten [Huntington]. Litten was a ship's fiddler with the British East India fleet on their voyage to the Orient during 1800-1802. From entries in Litten's manuscript, he apparently made it to China and at least much of the return voyage. His music manuscript collection came into the possession of Jared Coffin of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, in the early 19th century, who brought it home with him to the island when his own voyages ended.
''Source for notated version'': the 1800-1802 music manuscript copybook of ship's fiddler William Litten. Litten was a member of the British East India fleet, although little is known about him. His music manuscript was brought to Martha's Vineyard island by Allen Coffin (b. 1788) when he himself returned from voyages, although how and when he acquired the ms. is unknown. [Huntington].
