RIPPYTOE RAY. American, Fiddle and Song Tune (3/8 time). A Major. Standard or AEae tunings (fiddle). One part. 'Rippytoe' is one of the synonyms for 'tippytoe'. The 'recalcitrant fiddle' theme belongs to the "Twa Sisters" family of ballads collected in America and England, and can be referred to in most of the ballad collections.

And a damn good fiddler was he.
But all the tune that he could play
Was Tippytoe Ray, oh, Rippytoe Ray,
Oh, Rippytoe Ray, oh, ree-e-e.
Oh, Rippytoe Ray.

The title appears in a list of traditional Ozarks Mountains fiddle tunes compiled by musicologist/folklorist Vance Randolph, published in 1954, as "Rippytoe Ray."
