LUG OF THE SPADE, THE. AKA and see "Paddy the Piper (6)." Irish, Jig (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody is attributed to "Jackson" (i.e. Walker 'Piper' Jackson) in Ayr music teacher John Hall's c. 1818 volume A Selection of Strathspeys, Reel, Waltzes & Irish Jigs. However, by what authority the attribution was made is unknown; there is a history of Jackson's name being attached to many jigs, probably not all his compositions. The lug of the spade is the part where you place your foot.
County Cork cleric James Goodman entered a version of this tune in his large multi-volume mid-19th century music manuscript collection under the title "Paddy the Piper (6)" (see vol. 2, p. 172 [1]).
