SALLY KELLY [4]. AKA and see "Lisdoonvarna Polka (2)," "Leather Away with the Wattle." English, March (?) (cut time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune appears in the music manuscript copybooks of Luther Kingsley of Mansfield, Connecticut, and English musician John Buttery, from about the same time period--the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th. While very little is known of Kingsley, Buttery (1784-1854) was a fifer with British army's 37th (North Hampshire) Regiment of Foot (so designated in the army reorganization of 1782), who served from 1797-1814. Later in life he emigrated to Canada, where he died. A tune entitled "Sally Kelly O" was entered into the c. 1777 music commonplace book of Aaron Thompson and appears to be a variant. The tune is better-known as "Leather away the Wattle" and a variety of other names.
