CAMP CHASE [1]. American, Reel (cut time). USA, (central) W.Va. A Major (Brody, Phillips): D Major (Krassen). AEae tuning (W.Va): also found in GDgd version (James Bryan?) (fiddle). AAB: AA'B (Phillips). In some versions both parts have irregular measures. See "annotation:Camp Chase (2)" for notes. The tune was in the repertory of fiddler and banjo player Emory Bailey (1897-1960) of Shock, Calhoun County, central West Virginia. Bailey was the son of Winfield Scott Bailey (b. 1848) and grandson of William Bailey (b. 1816), both Civil War veterans who fought for the Confederacy in Company E, 14th Virginia Calvary, both obtaining the rank of Sergeant and Forage Master. Bailey was recorded in 1951 by Dr. Malvin Artley of Elon College, N.C.
