CAOINE, AN (The Lament). AKA and see "Irish Cry (1)," "Goll (The)," "Little Lamentation (The)," "Great Lamentation (The)," "Second Goll and Half Chorus," "Half Chorus of Sighs and Tears." Irish, Air (3/4 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. The index to Bunting's 1840 collection gives the source as "O'Neill, harper and from the hired mourners or keeners at Armagh; and from a MS. above 100 years old." A melody with the title "An Irish Cry" can be found in London publishers the Thompson's Hibernian Muse of 1786, followed by its jig. The Irish Cry is one of a category of tunes printed by various sources, that appear to be modeled on a vocal lamenting or keening. See Breandán Ó Madagáin Caointe agus Seancheolta Eile for more.
