REEL DE CAMILLIEN. AKA and see "Flannel Jacket," "Peeler's Jacket (2)." Canadian, Reel. Canada, Quebec. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Reel de Camillien", a version of the Irish reel "Peeler's Jacket (2)," was recorded in 1934 by Montreal fiddler Jospeh Allard (1873-1947) for Victor Records. Jean Duval records that the title honors Camillien Houde [1] (1889-1958), a politician, Member of Parliament, and four-time mayor of Montreal. Houde ran into trouble during World War II when he urged passive resistance to Canada's new conscription laws for compulsory military service. He was placed under arrest by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on charges of sedition and confined to a series of internment camps. Upon his release in 1944, he returned to Montreal to the cheers of a huge crowd and won back his job as mayor of the city in the 1944 civic election.
