MONTROSE RACES. Scottish, Strathspey (whole time). G Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The melody was included by Kirkmichael, Perthshire, fiddler and composer biography:Robert Petrie in his Second Collection of Strathspey Reels &c. (1796, p. 2). Montrose is a royal burgh in Angus, on the northeast Scottish coast. Horse racing in Montrose took place on the links--areas of rough grass on sandy soil, unsuitable for cultivation but used for sports activities. In 1821 at Montrose there were four races with a prize of 50 guineas, each prize given by a local landlord.
