ADMIRAL VERNON'S MARCH. English, March (whole time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. "Admiral Vernon's March" was first printed in London publisher John Johnson's Compleat Tutor for the Hautboy (1750, p. 20), then in Charles and Ann Thompson's The Compleat Tutor for the Hautboy (London, 1758) and Thompson & Son's Thirty Favourite Marches Which Are Now In Vogue (1759) as well as Charles and Samuel Thompson's Thirty Favourite Marches Book 1 (1768).
The melody was also entered into John Rook's (Waverton, Cumbria) large 1840 music manuscript collection (1840, p. 53). It was still earlier transcribed (as "Brave Admiral Vernon's March") into the late 18th century music manuscript of Welsh fiddler John Thomas, and into the 1764 ms. of Irish musician Jeremiah Regan (Bandon, Ireland).
Admiral Edward "Old Grog" Vernon Admiral [1] (1684-1757) was an English naval hero, honored for the capture of Porto Bello (Panama) in 1739. He was also a three-time Member of Parliment, outspoken on naval affairs.
