Numerous titles for the tune. The "Ap Shenkin" title comes from Parry ("Bard Alaw") in his book The Welsh Harper (vol. 1. p. 105), with the attribution: "Composed by J. Parry, 1803."

Samuel Bayard collected a version of the tune in southwestern Pennsylvania in the 1930's as an untitled square dance tune in the reportoire of fiddler and singer Samuel Losch (a middle-aged man who had been born in Juniata County).

Printed sources: Bayard (Dance to the Fiddle), 1981; No. 506, pg. 461 (appears as "Square Dance"). Goulding (Twenty Four Country Dances for the Year 1808), 1808; No. 2. Kennedy (Fiddler's Tune Book), vol. 1, No. 93, pg. 46. Kerr (Merry Melodies), vol. 3; No. 258, pg. 29. Riley's Flute Melodies, vol. I, 1814; pg. 58.
