DEMOCRATIC RAGE HORNPIPE. AKA and see "Crème de Menthe," "Democratic Hornpipe (2)," "Leddy's Hornpipe," "One of the Boys," "Reel de la grenouille," "Reel de la paix (1)," "Reel de la Pointe Bleue," "Reel de Pecheur/Reel du Pêcheur," "Set de Vaudreuil 4ème partie." American (originally), Canadian; Hornpipe. B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB (Cole, Miller & Perron, Perlman, Songer): AABB' (Cranford). The tune can be found in disparate regions, from New England to Quebec ("Reel du Pêcheur") and the American Midwest (as "Leddy's Hornpipe"), and, while not hugely popular it has managed to embed itself into different traditions (see Jean-Pierre Joyal's article "Le Processus de Composition Dans La Musique Instrumental du Quebec" in Canadian Journal for Traditional Music [1], 1980, for a discussion of the tune in Québec). Montreal fiddler Joseph Allard (1873-1947) recorded a version of "Democratic Rage" in 1930 as the fourth figure of a quadrille set (see "Set de Vaudreuil 4ème partie"), and Ferdinand Larouche issued a very similar recording in 1933 as "Reel de la Pointe Bleue;" two of several Quebecois versions. Francis O'Neill printed it in his Music of Ireland (1903) under the title "One of the Boys." A Pennsylvania-collected untitled reel in Bayard (1981; No. 100, p. 59) strongly resembles this tune.
