FAR AWAY. American, Waltz. B Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB. Composed in 1985 by Pete Jung (Kingston, N.Y.), who told editor Tim Mathiesen (1992): "I wrote this while playing the mandolin, on the way back home from a Brattleboro (VT) Dawn Dance, at about 7 A.M. I wrote it for a particular woman who has an enchanting but elusive quality-that was what I was trying to convey." The melody has become quite popular for contra dance waltzing, and pops up from time to time at sessions.
Source for notated version:
Printed sources: Matthiesen (Waltz Book 1), 1992; p. 21.
Recorded sources: CCF2, Cape Cod Fiddlers - "Concert Collection II" (1999). Maggie's Music, Ceoltoiri - "Silver Apples of the Moon." Wild Asparagus - "Tone Roads" (1990). Conor Keane - "Oidhreacht" (appears as "Nicholas Quemener's Waltz"-Quemener is with the group Arcady).
