Back to John Dan MacPherson's Jig
JOHN DAN MACPHERSON'S JIG. Canadian, Jig. Canada; Cape Breton, Prince Edward Island. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Dunlay & Reich (1986) note that according to Buddy MacMaster the tune was played in Cape Breton as long ago as the 1830's. The first strain of the Scottish "Cavehill" appears to be cognate with the first of "John Dan MacPherson's."
Sources for notated versions: Stephen Toole (1927-1995, Green Road, Queen's County, Prince Edward Island) [Perlman]; Buddy MacMaster (Cape Breton) [Dunlay & Reich].
Printed sources: Dunlay & Reich (Traditional Celtic Fiddle Music from Cape Breton), 1986; No. 82, p. 77 (appears as untitled jig). Perlman (The Fiddle Music of Prince Edward Island), 1996; p. 127.
