ELIZABETH NUGENT. Irish, Planxty (3/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. Composed by blind Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738) in honor of Elizabeth on the occasion of her wedding, finds O'Sullivan (1958), who quotes a passage from the Mundey-O'Reilly ms (pp. 189 & 208) in which Daniel Early says:
At this time Major Convey [Francis Conmee] of Kingsland was married to Miss Nugent near Port McGuire in the County of Longford. At the time she was brought home the greatest preparation was there. Mrs. MacDermott Roe was invited and family. She brought Carolan with her there. He composed the bride's 'welcome home.'
O'Sullivan concludes the wedding must have taken place prior to 1708, soon after Carolan began his career as a composer (pointing out that the air has none of the Italian composition influences of later compositions.
