DUCHESS, THE. New England, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). B Flat Major (?) ('A' and 'B' parts), F Major ('C' part) & C Minor (Trio). Standard tuning (fiddle). ABB'CC', Trio. The Duchess is also the name of a round dance, "...probably derived from a handkerchief morris dance. It was known as early as the 17th century. The melody is the one which was originally played for the dance in New England and has been used by Harry Brigham for sixty years" (Linscott).
Source for notated version: Harry E. Brigham (Marlboro, Mass.) [Linscott].
Printed sources: Linscott (Folk Songs of Old New England), 1939; pp. 75-76.
