CAPTAIN HOLMES. AKA and see "Captain Homes," "Cornelius Curtin's Big Balloon," "Hide and Go Seek." American, English, Irish; Jig. E Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune is of unknown provenance, but printed earliest with the "Captain Homes/Holmes" title in an English collection called A Companion to the reticule (1833), in three parts. However, the melody has been identified as a variant of the Irish "Hills of Glenorchy". Paul de Grae finds related melodies in the "Apples in Winter (1)" family.
