MONSIGNOR'S BLESSING, THE (Beannacht an Mhoinsíneora). AKA and see "Father Kelly's Reel (3)," "Over the Bog Road." Irish, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The melody is similar to "Twin Katy's," "Humors of Newcastle (The)" and "Captain Kelly's Reel (2)." Source Kathleen Collins also called the tune "Captain Kelly's Reel," according to Brendan Breathnach, which is the name of a similar tune in the O'Neill collections (See "Captain Kelly's/Kelley Reel (1)"). The first strain of "Nancy in the Hobble" seems distantly related to the first strain of "Monsignor's Blessing."

Source for notated version: fiddler Kathleen Collins [Breathnach].

Printed sources: Black (Music's the Very Best Thing), 1996; No. 67, p. 35. Breathnach (CRÉ 3), 1985; No. 157, p. 73. Cranitch (The Irish Fiddle Book), 1996; No. 63, p. 50. Taylor (The Crossroads Dance), 1992; No. 17, p. 14.

Recorded sources: Shanachie Records 29002, "Kathleen Collins" (1976. Learned from the late Kerry fiddler Johnny Cronin). Shaskeen – "The Mouse Behind the Dresser." Matt Cranitch – "Take a Bow."
