It is considered one of his better, but lesser-known compositions, opines Emmerson (1971), agreeing with the collector John Glen (1895) who listed it as among those of Gow's "exceedingly good compositions." Bothwell Castle lies southeast of Glasgow, in Scotland's Clyde region; in fact, the Clyde runs along the north side of the structure.
