CRIEFF MEETING, THE. Scottish, Reel. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB'. The melody appears in John Bowie's A Collection of Strathspey Reels & Country Dances (Edinburgh, 1789). Carolina Oliphant, Lady Nairne (1766-1845). wrote a song to this melody entitled "County Meeting". It begins:
Ye're welcome, leddies, ane and a',
Ye're welcome to our County Ha';
Sae weel ye look when buskit braw,
To grace our county meeting.
An' gentlemen, ye're welcome, too,
In waistcoats white and tartan too;
Gae seek a partner, mak' your bow,
Syne dance our County Meeting.
The town of Crieff lies in the Scottish province of Perth and Kinross. It was a center for industry in the 18th century, and was the hub of a system of drove roads as well as an important cattle market. Crieff is also home to the Glenturret Distillery, Scotland's oldest Highland malt whiskey distillery, dating from 1775.
