The tune was composed by biography:George Saunders of Providence, Rhode Island, although it sound like a borrowing from "Lucy Campbell (3)." Saunders was a music teacher (self-professed "Professor of Music and Dancing") and ran a music shop where he sold instruments and sheet music. He also was in demand as a dance caller and musician from 1820's until his death in 1850.
Saunders evidently used this tune as a meme for students to remember as a familiarity as they played it in different keys, as they were introduced in the tutor.
