Joyce himself says it “is known all over the Munster counties, as well as in Leinster and Connaught.” Petrie (Ancient Music of Ireland, 1855) gives the song as “I Wish the Shepherd’s Pet Were Mine” and says he obtained it from Teige MacMahon of Clare.
