MISS HALDAN GLENEAGLES [2]. AKA and see "Mr. John Shaw Stewart’s (2)." Scottish, Strathspey. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The melody appears in Biography:Malcolm MacDonald’s 2nd Collection of 1789, dedicated to the Earl of Breadalbane. The exact same tune was printed, at almost the same time, by Glasgow musician and fiddler-composer Joshua Campbell who called it "Mr. John Shaw Stewart’s (2)." Who actually composed it, or the proper title, is unknown.
At the time MacDonald's volume was published (1789) the estate of Gleneagles, Perthshire, was in the possession of George Cockburn, a son of a female inheritor of a portion of the Haldane estate, on condition that he merge his name and arms with that of the Haldane family (from whom he inherited the lands). He died without issue in 1799, so the "Miss Haldan(e)" of the title must refer to another of the Haldane Gleneagles family.
