Francis O'Neill credits the melody to the blind Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738), although by what authority it is not known. It was printed in John Thomas Surenne's (1814-1878) Irish Songs without Words in 1854, sans composer attribution, and with the alternate title "Little Harvest-Rose (The)."
