WESTMORELAND. AKA – “Westmorland.” English, Country Dance Tune (6/4 or 6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. “Westmorland” was first printed in John Playford’s Dancing Master, 7th edition [1] (London, 1686) and appeared in all subsequent editions of the long-running series, through the 18th, published at the time by John Young in 1728. It was picked up by rival London publisher John Walsh and appears in his The Compleat Country Dancing Master (London, 1718, with editions in 1735 and 1754). Westmorland was one of the traditional 39 counties of England, located in the north-west of the country. It presently forms part of Cumbria. See also the waltz setting of the melody, "Westmoreland Waltz."
