At a parade of the staff of the 2nd Battalion Cameron Highlanders at the Militia Barracks, Inverness, on Saturday, Major Bayne, the adjutant of the regiment, presented Pipe Major John Macdonald with a handsome set of bagpipes. In doing so, Major Bayne said he had been asked to perform the ceremony by Mr. Ross, Her Majesty's piper, on behalf of the sergeants of the 42nd Regiment (The Black Watch), as a token of their esteem and regard on his leaving the regiment after over twenty-one years' service, during which he had played them into battle in Ashantee, Lower Egypt, and the Soudan. Quartermaster-Sergeant, Dunbar, writing from Egypt to Mr. Ross, said Macdonald had played to the Black Watch under almost every circumstance--in the camp, in the field, and in action--often when they had nothing to eat, and also in the days when they had plenty. It would be a long tome before he was forgotten. Pipe-Major Macdonald, who was recently appointed to take command of the splendid pipe band of the 2nd Battalion of Cameron Highlanders, went through all the engagements in Ashantee, Lower Egypt, and the Soudan, and is decorated with five medals of honour of his gallant services. He briefly thanked the sergeants of the Black Watch for their expression of esteem, remarking that he could never forget the scenes through which he had passed in their company.
