Back to Bonnie Jamie O'

BONNIE JAMIE O. AKA "Young Jamie." Scottish, English; Song Air (cut time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. "Bonnie/Bonny Jamie O" AKA "Young Jamie" was an 18th century song performed at London pleasure gardens ("Sung by Mrs. Wrighten, at Vauxhall"), and frequently anthologized from 1780 in period songsters, and issued on broadsides. It is sometimes listed as 'anonymous', but occasionally attributed to the prolific composer James Hook (1746—1827), who is though to have written some two thousand songs. The first stanza begins:

Where the new mown hay on winding Tay,
The sweets of spring discloses;
As I one morning singing lay,
Upon a bank of roses.
Young Jamie shisking o'er the mead,
By geud luck chanc'd to spy me,
He took his bonnet off his head,
And fastly sat down by me.

My bonny, bonny Jamie O,
My bonny, bonny Jamie O;
I care not tho' the world shou'd know,
How dearly I love Jamie O.
