CAPTAIN CAMERON'S VOLUNTEERS MARCH--BALVENIE. Scottish, March. E Flat Major (Johnson/2003, Marshall): D Major (Johnson/1992). Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Composed by William Marshall (1748-1833). Moyra Cowie (The Life and Times of William Marshall, 1999), finds that Captain Cameron lived at Balvenie farm, near Dufftown. Unfortunately, the Captain was not always forthcoming in his payments to his landlord, Alexander, the 4th Duke of Gordon, for whom Marshall worked as Steward of the Household, and the Duke's solicitor in Banff directed Marshall to send a bill of sequestration to the family. As it turned out, relates Cowie, Marshall's grand-daughter married into Captain Cameron's family, as her mother-in-law was a relation.
