CAPTAIN M'KENZIE [2]. Scottish, Strathspey. A Minor/Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB (Ross): AABB. John Glen (1891) finds the earliest printing of the tune in Robert Ross's 1780 collection (p. 2), while Charles Gore gives the earliest publication as John Hamilton's A Choice Coll of Scots Reels, or C.C. & Str.. The melody was included by Kirkmichael, Perthshire, fiddler and composer Robert Petrie in his Second Collection of Strathspey Reels and Country Dances (1796, p. 9). "Captain MacKenzie (3)" is an English reel setting of the tune, somewhat distanced.
