GILLIS' FAVOURITE. Canadain, Reel. Canada, Cape Breton. D Major/Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB'. Various Cape Breton fiddlers have reversed the parts. Alexander Gillis was one half of the Inverness Serenaders (with Alcide Aucoin), fiddlers who recorded for Decca Records in the 1930's. Both had moved to Boston in search of work (Aucoin was an electric welder and Gillis was a carpenter), who, in addition to their recordings, broadcast over the radio and played Saturday night dances at O'Connell Hall, Dudley Street. Unfortunately, Gillis's fiddling career was cut short when he lost a finger working in his sawmill.
