ORTON HORNPIPE. English, Hornpipe (4/4 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Although Lake District musician William Irwin put his name to the tune in his c. 1850 music manuscript collection, it is, as researcher Chris Partington notes, "remarkably similar" to the popular hornpipes "Rickett's Hornpipe" AKA "Manchester Hornpipe (1)." Orton, northwest England, is a small market village in the rolling hills of Cumbria, established during the reign of Edward I in the 13th Century, and looks out over views of Orton Scar and the Howgills.
