ROBBER, THE (An Foghlaidhe). AKA and see "Charley Reilly," "Croppy Boy (2) (The)." Irish, Air (3/4 time). B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. Researcher Donal O'Sullivan (1983) finds the tune a variant of "Cailin o chois tSiuire" (The Croppy Boy), common to the British Isles. Several variants are included in English folk song collections; for example in Peter Kennedy's Folksongs of Britain and Ireland as "Newlyn Town," and in Frank Kidson's A Garland of English Folk Songs (1926) beginning "In Newlyn town I was born and bred." O'Sullivan refers those interested in further variants to Margaret Dean-Smith's 1954 A Guide to English Folk Song Collections.
