SURRENDER OF CALAIS, THE. English, Country Dance Tune (cut time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The Surrender of Calais was a three-act comic opera performed at the Theatre Royal in the Hay Market, London, in 1791. It was written by George Colman the Younger, an English dramatist, writer of scurrilous satiric verse and theatre manager whose comic operas, farces, melodramas, and sentimental comedies were well received in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. "The Surrender of Calais", set to music by Samuel Arnold (1740-1802), was successful and ran for 28 performances in the summer of 1791. It is based on a historical theme taken from a French novel of the same name, in which Edward III demands that six burghers of Calais present themselves for execution. The King is persuaded by his wife to spare the victim.
