WINONA RAG. American, Country Rag (cut time). The Ray Brothers of Choctaw County, Chester, Mississippi, were fiddler Will Ray with his brother Vardman on guitar, although there were more brothers in the musical family. Artist and researcher Robert "R." Crumb is of the opinion that they "formed one of the finest fiddle-guitar ensembles ever recorded, rivaled only by the Stripling Brothers, their Alabama twins" [R. Crumb's Heroes of Blues, Jazz & Country Music, p. 194]. They recorded a total of ten tunes, for Victor Records, in November, 1930. Winona is a town in north-central Mississippi.
