CALEDONIAN CANAL. Scottish, Strathspey. D Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The Caledonian Canal connects the east and west coasts of Scotland, taking advantage of a geologic feature, the Great Glen, a fault line the runs the width of the country. It was begun in 1803 and not completed until 1822. It was not a great success, owing to it being constructed poorly in some places and too shallow in others, and by the time these problems were collected in the middle of the century, railroads were performing the task of moving goods more efficiently.
