'''BLUE STOCKING, THE'''. English, Jig. England, Shropshire. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The title perhaps refers to the term Blue-Stocking, which referred to a learned, pedantic or literary woman by the year 1810. The adjective was applied from around the mid-18th century to the frequenters of Montagu House, London, where literary talk and discourse replaced cards as entertainment. It derives from the practice of one of the leading lights of the assemblies, Benjamin Stillingfleet, a sometimes poet, who sported blue worsted stockings, which Admiral Boscawen dubbed the Blue Stocking Society.
