CRONIN'S HORNPIPE (Cornphíopa Uí Chróinín). AKA and see "Denis Murphy's Hornpipe," "Murhpy's Hornpipe." Irish, Hornpipe. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABB (Miller & Perron): AABB (Breathnach, Cranitch, Mallinson, Tubridy): AA'BB (Moylan). The hornpipe takes its name in this instance from County Kerry fiddler Paddy Cronin, who recorded it in 1950 for Boston-based Copely Records [1]. It was recorded in 1952 from the playing of Sliabh Luachra fiddlers Padraig O'Keefe, Denis Murphy and Julia Clifford ("Kerry Fiddles"). Cronin, Murphy and Clifford were all students of itinerant music master Padraig O'Keeffe, who is perhaps the source for the tune. Cranitch (1996) suggests playing this as the first tune of a medley with "Chief O'Neill's Favorite."
