BETTY MACNEILL. Irish, Planxty (cut time). A Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Composed by Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738). O'Sullivan (1958) records that Betty was the daughter of Captain MacNeill of Ballymascanlon, a few miles north-east of Dundalk, County Louth (for whom O'Carolan also wrote a tune, according to collector Edward Bunting, although now lost). O'Sullivan believes it possible that the harper stayed with the MacNeill's on the occasion of his visit to Louth to meet the poet Séamus Mac Cuarta (who also wrote a poem in praise of Betty).
