Mulhollan (Edinburgh, 1804) notes that the version he prints is a 'New Sett', contrasting with the older air "Down the Burn Davie (2)" that first appears in William Thompson's Orpheus Caledonius (1733). Keith MacDonald's 1887 setting is a reprint of Gow, who remarks that his is a "Modern set by particular desire." See also O'Neill's Irish version as "By the Brookside."
