JUMENT GRISE, LA. AKA and see "Gigue de campagne," "Reel de Chicoutimi," "Reel de Péribonka," "Spruce Knot (The)," French-Canadian, Reel (cut time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune has been recorded several times under different titles, and the first part is something of a 'floating strain' that has been attached to other parts, as well. Joseph Allard's "Reel de Péribonka" (1945) is cognate in both parts (reversed), as is Georges Frappier's "Sets canadiens (2)" (1921). A.J. Boulay's "Gigue de campagne" is cognate in the duple-time strains following the the first strain in 6/8 time. Paul Fackler also finds a cognate version in Douglastown, Gaspé, fiddler Erskine Morris's "Bois-Brulé Jig."
Allard's nearly identically-titled "Reel de la jument grise" is a different tune altogether (a variant of "Enrico").
