DOUBLE SET BACK. AKA - "Double Setback." English, Reel and Morris Dance Tune 2/2 time). C Major (Carlin): G Major (Callaghan, Mallinson). Standard tuning (fiddle). ABB (Carlin): ABB' (Bacon): AABB (x4), AA (Callaghan, Mallinson). From the village of Headington, Oxfordshire, in England's Cotswolds. The tune is a variant of "Morning Star (2)," and was collected by Cecil Sharp from Headington Quarry, a morris dance side he encountered on Boxing Day in 1899. Sharp published the tune in 1909. Anglo concertina player (and bricklayer) William "Merry" Kimber (1872-1961), Sharp’s informant on the Headington Quarry morris dance tradition, recorded the tune in 1946. Phillip Heath-Coleman [1] remarks that the tune apperas in Peter Kennedy's Fiddler's Tune Book, vol. 1, and Tro Llaw (Bowen, 1987) with 'notier' second strains, "which seem to reflect a precursor of the Locke, Benfield and Kimber versions."

Sources for notated versions: Charles Benfield [Bacon], James Locke [Sharp], William Kimber [Callaghan].
