Effingham learned his music from the singing of his parents at home, from the fiddle playing of his grandfather (many of whose tunes remained in Effingham's repertory), and from an older Illinois native, Joe Dixon, a one-time circus entertainer.

Printed sources: Phillips (Traditional American Fiddle Tunes, vol. 2), 1995; p. 374.
