DULL SIR JOHN. English, Country Dance Tune (6/8 time). G Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune was first published by Playford in his English Dancing Master (1651), closely followed by its inclusion in Playford's A Booke of New Lessons for the Cithern & Gittern (1652, No. 85). "Dull Sir John" was retained in every edition of the long-running Dancing Master series through the 18th and final edition of 1728, then printed in London by John Young, heir to the Playford publishing concern. It was also published by John Young, the name of both father and son publishers, in their Complete Country Dancing-Master, editions of 1718, 1731 and 1754.
