BRITAINS, THE. AKA and see "Wooden Shoes." English, Country Dance Tune (2/2 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Sharp notes: "To the tune of 'Wooden Shoes'" meaning that the dance was called The Britains, set to the tune of Wooden Shoes. Melodies often became associated with specific dances, the name of the dance transferring to the tune. See note for Playford's "annotation:Wooden Shoes (2)."
