CRIEFF FAIR [2]. Scottish, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Boston publisher Elias Howe included this tune, not in his section of 'Scotch Melodies', but with his contra-dance tunes, although he labelled it a "Scotch Reel". It carries the same label in Providence, Rhode Island, violinist and dance fiddler George Saunders' 1847 violin tutor, Howe's likely source for the tune. The reel was entered into the music manuscript book of fiddler M.E. Eames, frontispiece dated Aug. 22nd, 1859 (p. 10); unfortunately, nothing is known of Eames, save that a few of the tune titles in his manuscript suggest a Philadelphia, Pa., connection.
