BANDS OF SPEY [2]. Scottish, Air (whole time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The air was employed by poet Robert Burns as the vehicle for his song "Talk not of love, it gives me pain," printed in the Scots Musical Museum, vol. 2 (1788). Burns adapted verses that were originally written by a woman named Clarinda M'Lehose [1] (1759-1841)--the first six lines are in fact Clarinda's, with subsequent verses by Burns. The first stanza goes:

Talk not of love, it gives me pain,
For love has been my foe;
He bound me with an iron chain,
And plung'd me deep in woe.
