MERRY MAKERS SCHOTTISCHE. Scottish, Schottische. G Major ('A' & 'B' parts) & C Major ('C' & 'D' parts). Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BBCDD. The composition is credited to "J. Coutts" in Kerr's Merry Melodies, vol. 1 (c. 1880). David Baptie (Musical Scotland, Past and Present, 1894) has one entry for a Coutts--John Coutts, "a native of Upper Deeside. Said to be the talented composer of that popular strathspey, "Braes of Mar (1) (The)," but of his biography little seems to be known" (p. 217). Whether this is the same person referenced in the Kerr's volume is unknown.
